in Gonorrhea

The clap, the drip, GC, or just plain old gonorrhea. No matter what you call it, if you think you may have contracted it, there are certain things you should look for.

But first, what the heck is gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a STI, or an sexually transmitted infection, that is spread through either vaginal, anal, or oral sexual contact. And while it affects men and women differently, if you treat it right away with antibiotics it shouldn’t cause you any serious problems in the long run.

However, if you don’t treat it, it can eventually infect the rectum, anus, throat, pelvic organs, and even the eyes in severe cases.

While gonorrhea affects both men and women by infecting the urethra, in women it can also infect the cervix. And if left untreated it can move into the uterus, fallopian tubes, and even ovaries which can lead to painful scar tissue and inflammation.

However for men, if left untreated gonorrhea may increase their chances of bladder cancer.

So how does one tell if you have the symptoms of gonorrhea? Well, keep on reading.

The Symptoms Of Gonorrhea

It is quite common for those who may have contracted gonorrhea to not even know it as the symptoms may sometimes never show up, especially in women.

And while the incubation period from the time of exposure to the bacteria to when symptoms develop is usually 2 to 5 days, sometimes symptoms may not materialize for up to a month after exposure. In fact, there is a chance that your symptoms may not even show up until the infection has spread to other parts of your body.

So what are these symptoms of gonorrhea? Well in women the early signs of the infection can be so mild that they are occasionally mistaken for a bladder or vaginal infection. However, once your symptoms amp up they can include:

  • painful or frequent urination
  • anal itching, bleeding, discharge, or general discomfort
  • unusual vaginal discharge
  • abnormal vaginal bleeding either during/after sex or between periods
  • genital itching
  • irregular periods
  • lower abdominal pain
  • fever
  • tiredness
  • swollen and painful glands at the opening of the vagina
  • pain during sex
  • sore throat, although this is rare
  • pink eye, again this is very rare

The symptoms for men, while somewhat similar to women, are usually obvious enough to prompt a man to get his symptoms checked out. The symptoms a man experiences can include:

  • unusual discharge from the penis (starting out clear or milky and then turning yellow, creamy, and sometimes blood-tinged)
  • painful or frequent urination
  • anal itching, bleeding, discharge, or general discomfort
  • sore throat, again this is rare
  • pink eye, same as above and very rare

What Should I Do Now?

Now that you know what the symptoms of gonorrhea are and what you should be looking for, your next step should be finding out if you have in fact contracted gonorrhea.

To do this simply make an appointment with your doctor, visit your nearest sexual health clinic, or even order a discreet and accurate at-home STD test.

Whichever way you decide to get tested it is imperative that you do so, that way you can treat the infection before it spreads to other, more serious, parts of your body and potentially cause you more problems than necessary.

Finally, it is so important to keep in mind that gonorrhea is not a death sentence.

While it may be uncomfortable or embarrassing, you can cure it with the right antibiotics but it is crucial that you take them exactly how they are prescribed to ensure you kill the infection.

Just keep in mind that you will be okay, and that you will overcome this. It may be a scary time in your life but you have the ability to cure the infection and get back to living a normal, healthy life.

You are strong enough to get through this. Stay positive and remember, we have faith in you.
